Little River

14 January 2018

It finally stopped raining! We got a bit of housework done Saturday and even got ourselves out to the Hawarden pool. After church Sunday morning (the vicar in our district rotates through the Anglican churches and this week was Waikari), we took off toward Banks Peninsula (near Christchurch). We don't have a smartphone and our ancient Subaru (240,000+ km) has some kind of navigation system, but we think the only map is for Hong Kong (maybe Phuket). So we scribbled some direction-related notes and Ruben got behind the wheel.

About an hour later we arrived in Little River! It's a blink on the roadway on the way to Akaroa from Christchurch, but so cute! And busy on Sunday afternoon.

Our accommodation was a SiloStay. Our silo is the front right (Silo #1). It's billed as eco-friendly, with composting toilets and sustainable everything it can. Why stay in a silo rather than a motor lodge? Why not?

The view from the car park toward our silo. Old Man Subaru (pronounced sub a roo) makes an appearance! There were two other cars in the car park, so we weren't alone. There is no office or onsite staff; we were given a code to enter into a lockbox that contained our silo key.

Ruben didn't have much trouble getting comfortable in the silo's upstairs bedroom.

Sign out front about the SiloStay project.

I found Little River (and the SiloStay) as I was searching rides on the RailTrail from Christchurch. Turns out the final completed stretch is from Birdling Flat to Little River Station. So that's what we did. In reverse, and made it a return trip (it was to be 20 km; we think we did about 30 km).

We rode for about 2 hours and stopped at the Little River Hotel for pub grub. Actually it was quite good. I enjoyed beetroot and carrot soup while Ruben had citrus pork and mash. I was getting on dusk when we rode the final 1 km to the SiloStay (about 9:45 pm). Ruben still had a bit of energy to goof around with some decorations.
