A city we hadn't visited during past trips is Dunedin.
Dunedin is considered Southland, a place we spend a lot of time during our last trip, but that trip we did a lot of adventuring in Fiordland, which was well worth the effort. Cities aren't usually our thing. It was raining when we left Waimete Friday (don't worry, I got into the pool and Ruben did a track workout before we left!) so we made our destination the Otago Settler's Museum. I find that a local history museum is really a great way to start a visit to a new city. The rest of our visit, we recognized names of streets and locations and had a little bit of insight into the city. That's nice!
The museum starts, as usual, with the Maori legends and history. Then it quickly got into the "pakeha" (white European New Zealander) history in the region. Mid-1800s. The city is oceanside, so the port is of course important. We always like dress-up.

The transport section of the museum had a lot of early motorized bicycles. The city is very hilly! |
