Kaikoura on Christmas Eve

24 December 2017

What a beautiful day in Kaikoura! There is not a cloud in the sky (except hovering near the mountaintops) and it is 26 degrees. We learned from the hotel hosts that nearly everything would be closed in town on Christmas Day, so we knew that a trip to the grocery store outside of town was in order, but we went to swim in the ocean first. It was cold. And the surf was too rough for me, but Ruben got out there and did some swimming until the surf picked up and he turned back. There is a fair amount of kelp on this side of the island. We learned that the Southern Bay has clearer water. We'll go there later.

The trip to the grocery store was a pretty long walk and the place was madness. Lots of camper vans and holiday park folks getting supplies as well as the locals planning Christmas tea. We had a really nice batch lunch on the hotel's patio.
